The Black Hole memorial stands in the Churchyard of St John’s Calcutta. The inscription states that it was erected by Lord Curzon to replace one which was erected by a fellow survivor J.Z. Holwell and had been removed in 1821.
The original monument and this one had stood near the site of the Black Hole in Fort William. I don’t know when it was moved to St John’s.
The list of names on the monument had been added to by reference to contemporary records. Sadly I seem to have only four of the six sides, I can’t remember why, it may be that the other two were indecipherable even when there. So only the fourth of the pictures below contains names and these are not clear. |
